DSG vs SSG: Choosing the Right Sector-Gear Layout
SSG and DSG describe the piston-engagement layout on the sector gear. A conventional single-sector gear (SSG) has one engagement section. A dual-sector gear (DSG) has two. This is separate from the written gear ratio: a ratio and a sector layout answer different build questions.
What changes with a DSG
Two engagement sections change how often the sector gear picks up the piston during one rotation. That affects the available piston travel and the timing window for the tappet plate and nozzle. It also makes the build more dependent on coordinated piston, spring, motor, battery and electronic-control choices. It does not guarantee a specific rate of fire or trigger response.
Why an SSG is usually simpler to plan
An SSG follows the conventional one-engagement cycle and offers more familiar starting points for piston travel and tappet timing. That does not make every SSG interchangeable: ratio, platform, sector geometry and surrounding parts still need to match.

- Check piston pickup and release through a manual cycle.
- Verify tappet-plate and nozzle movement.
- Finish shimming and motor-height adjustment before powered testing.
