Piston Head O-Ring: FKM vs. Silicone — Which Seal Fits Your Build?

At JVAN, our piston heads ship with two O-ring material options: FKM (Viton) and Silicone (VMQ). If you're unsure which one to choose, the answer depends on your climate, play style, and how hard you run your AEG.
Unlike the static seal on a cylinder head, the piston head O-ring is a dynamic seal — it cycles back and forth inside the cylinder every single shot. That means friction, heat, and compression matter a lot more here. Here's how the two materials compare.
| Feature |
FKM (Viton) |
Silicone (VMQ) |
| Temp Range |
-20°C to +200°C |
-60°C to +200°C |
| Cold Weather |
Stiffens below -10°C |
Stays flexible |
| Heat & Friction |
Excellent resistance |
Good, but wears faster |
| Friction / Cycling |
Slightly higher drag |
Smoother, lower drag |
| Durability |
Longer service life |
Shorter under high RPS |
| Best For |
Hot climates / high-RPS builds |
Cold climates / smooth cycling |
Choose FKM If...
-
You play in hot or tropical climates (above 30°C regularly)
-
You run a high-RPS or high-stress build (rapid cycling generates heat and wear)
-
You want a low-maintenance seal that holds up longer between services
FKM handles heat and lubricants exceptionally well. For players who put volume through their AEG, it's the more durable choice.
Choose Silicone If...
-
You play in cold weather or freezing indoor arenas
-
You want the smoothest possible piston travel with minimal drag
-
You run a semi-auto or low-RPS setup where wear is less aggressive
Silicone stays soft and elastic in freezing conditions where FKM would stiffen and lose seal. The trade-off is faster wear under sustained high-speed use.
Our Recommendation
There is no single "best" O-ring — only the best match for your environment. That's why JVAN both FKM and Silicone options on our piston heads.
Every O-ring is dimensionally inspected and batch-tested for air seal before it leaves our facility, so whichever material you choose, you get reliable, consistent performance.
