FKM vs Silicone Piston Head O-Rings

FKM and silicone name elastomer families, not a guaranteed seal result. For an AEG piston head, the exact compound, hardness, cross-section, cylinder finish, groove fit and lubricant compatibility matter as much as the material name.

How the material families differ

FKM compounds are often selected where resistance to heat, oils or chemicals is important. Silicone compounds can remain flexible across a broad temperature range. Those general properties do not establish wear life or sealing performance in a moving AEG piston; formulation and application still decide the result.

Check the seal in the actual assembly

1. Match the O-ring dimensions to the piston-head groove and cylinder bore.
2. Confirm the lubricant is compatible with the exact compound.
3. Inspect for twisting, cuts, flattening and excessive drag.
4. Test compression through the usable stroke rather than judging the loose O-ring alone.

A very tight seal can add friction, while a loose or damaged seal can leak. Do not select FKM or silicone from climate claims alone, and do not assume either material guarantees FPS consistency or longer service life.
