Airsoft Gear Sets: A Practical Selection Overview
Do not start with a ratio label. Start with the job the airsoft gear set needs to do:
- Replacement: You know which part failed and can identify the existing gear family and surrounding parts.
- General rebuild: You are rebuilding a conventional AEG or working with a gearbox whose parts history is unclear.
- Specialist configuration: The build uses a platform-specific gear train, sector setup or control system that requires exact documentation.
The right path depends on the gearbox application, included parts, shell and axle support, motor input, piston system and installation plan. A ratio, material or platform label is one field to check. It does not predict the performance or compatibility of the completed AEG.
Choose by the job first
Replacing one damaged gear
A single replacement gear may be considered when it is documented for the same gear family and the mating geometry, ratio family, axle support and intended application are known. Inspect the other gears, motor pinion, anti-reversal latch and piston rack before deciding that one part is enough.
If several parts show chipped teeth or damaged contact, a support is loose, the family is unknown or the cause of failure is unclear, stop and compare a documented complete set or ask a qualified technician. Do not assume gears from different sets or generations will work together.
Planning a general rebuild
For a general rebuild or a gearbox with unknown parts history, begin with a complete set listed for the intended application. Then verify the shell, axle supports and surrounding drive parts. A complete set describes the supplied group of gears; it does not mean drop-in installation.
Working with a specialist configuration
A specialist or platform-specific build should start with the exact Product Page and the required piston, tappet and control-system conditions. A broad V2, V3, SR25, SVD or M14 label narrows the search, but it does not establish exact fit. Ratio and sector configuration also remain separate choices.
What may be included in an AEG gear set
Many conventional AEG gear sets use one bevel gear, one spur gear and one sector gear. The bevel stage receives input from the motor pinion, the spur transfers rotation and the sector connects the gear train to the piston cycle.
That conventional layout is not a universal pack list. Platform-specific sets can use a different arrangement or an additional gear. JVAN's documented SVD pack list, for example, includes a sector gear, first spur gear, second spur gear and bevel gear. That example shows why the included-parts list matters; it does not promise fit in every SVD replica.
Use a compatibility-first matrix

Compare evidence, not slogans
A useful Product Page should let you compare more than a ratio or a high-speed/high-torque label.
- Included parts: Read the written pack list. Do not infer it from the main photo.
- Application: Look for a specific gearbox or platform statement, plus exceptions and supporting-part requirements.
- Material and process: Ask which exact component the claim covers and where the specification comes from. Steel, CNC machining or a hardness label alone does not prove durability, quiet operation or a finished-build result.
- Testing: Useful test information identifies the exact product, complete configuration, conditions, method and limits. An isolated round count, FPS or ROF figure is not transferable to another build.
- Installation support: Compatibility charts, service instructions and a support route are stronger evidence than “drop-in” language.
- Packaging and supply: Confirm the current pack quantity, included parts, stock and retail or wholesale route on the current Product Page or quotation. Do not rely on an older Article for changing commercial details.
No ratio, tooth count, material, platform name or manufacturing label can by itself guarantee speed, torque, ROF, FPS, trigger response, durability, noise or compatibility.

Before you order or test
Write down the exact replica and gearbox application, whether you need a single gear or complete set, the listed pack contents, shell and support requirements, and the surrounding motor/pinion, spring and piston load, battery and control-system conditions. If a required dimension, mating part or compatibility statement is missing, ask for the exact product documentation instead of guessing.
Opening a gearbox adds spring and electrical hazards. Remove the magazine, clear the replica, disconnect the battery, wear eye protection and follow the exact platform service procedure only if the spring energy can be controlled. With power disconnected, manually check smooth gear movement, clearance, support seating, shimming, pinion-to-bevel mesh, ARL engagement, piston pickup and release, and applicable tappet, cutoff, sensor or ETU relationships under that procedure.
Conduct powered testing only with the gearbox or replica safely enclosed, no magazine or BBs, and the exact ETU or manufacturer procedure where applicable; begin with short controlled tests.
Stop if the gear train binds, a part contacts the shell, pickup or release is uncertain, the ARL does not engage, the cycle becomes irregular, a new grinding or impact sound appears, heat rises abnormally, wiring is damaged or an ETU reports an error. Do not try to wear in a hard spot.
