How to Choose an AEG Piston Head
A piston head should be selected as part of the AEG compression assembly, not by material alone. Check cylinder fit, O-ring behavior, venting, mass and assembly condition before deciding whether the original part needs replacement.
What to inspect
- O-ring fit: it must seal against the cylinder without excessive drag.
- Venting: ported designs depend on air pressure to expand the O-ring during the cycle.
- Fasteners: the head must remain secure on the piston and should be assembled according to the part maker’s instructions.
- Mass and clearance: a different head can change the moving assembly and available space.
- Cylinder condition: dirt, scoring or an unsuitable surface can defeat a new seal.
Material does not decide the result
Polymer and metal piston heads can both work when the dimensions and build requirements are correct. Material choice alone does not guarantee a better seal, faster response or longer service life.
Verify after assembly
Check the piston group by hand before closing the gearbox. After assembly, confirm normal cycling and use a chronograph to look for repeatability. If results remain inconsistent, inspect the cylinder head, nozzle, bucking and timing before blaming the piston head.
