AEG Cylinders: Ports, Volume and Fit
An AEG cylinder guides the piston and contains the air displaced during the compression stroke. Choosing one requires more than matching its outside appearance: the cylinder type, port position, effective piston stroke, barrel volume and sealing components work as a system.
What a cylinder port changes
A port limits the portion of the cylinder used for compression. Its effect depends on where the piston head passes the port during the stroke. A full cylinder and a ported cylinder can therefore provide different effective air volumes even when their outside dimensions are similar.
Match the whole compression assembly
- Confirm gearbox format and physical cylinder dimensions.
- Inspect the inside surface for damage or contamination.
- Check the piston-head seal through its actual travel.
- Verify the cylinder head, nozzle, hop-up and barrel as an assembled path.
- Use the effective stroke and inner-barrel volume for volume calculations.
A standard gear ratio such as 18:1 or 13:1 does not by itself change cylinder volume. Stroke changes, including some short-stroke or DSG configurations, must be considered separately. There is no universal cylinder-to-barrel ratio that guarantees FPS, range or efficiency across every BB weight and build.
