Airsoft Gearbox Bushings vs Bearings

Bushings and bearings both support the gear shafts in an AEG gearbox. The better choice depends on shell fit, shaft dimensions, available clearance, load and how the gearbox will be serviced.

How they differ

A bushing is a solid bearing surface with no rolling elements. A ball bearing uses inner and outer races with rolling elements between them. That construction changes the space, load path and failure points, but it does not make either option universally superior.

What to check before installation

• The outside diameter matches the gearbox-shell bore.
• The gear shaft fits without binding or excessive play.
• The installed part seats flat and does not move in the shell.
• The gear, shims and shell have enough axial clearance.
• The selected support suits the build load and service plan.

Do not skip shimming

Neither bushings nor bearings eliminate the need to check gear alignment and axial play. After installation, rotate the gear train by hand, check mesh and confirm the shell closes without loading the shafts.
