AEG Gearbox Bushings: What to Measure and Check

A gearbox bushing is a plain support for a gear axle. It is not the same component as a ball bearing. Before choosing a replacement, measure the gearbox-shell opening and inspect the gear axle, because the listed outside diameter alone does not confirm the complete fit.

Bushing or bearing?

A bushing supports the axle on a plain internal surface. A bearing uses rolling elements. Each requires the correct shell opening, seating depth and axle relationship. Do not substitute one for the other without checking the gearbox design.

Checks before installation

• Confirm the shell opening and the product’s listed size.
• Inspect the axle and support for wear or damage.
• Make sure the flange and body sit fully against the shell.
• Check that the support cannot rotate or lift during assembly.

Shimming after replacement

Changing a support can change the gear position. Recheck bevel, spur and sector-gear shimming with the shell closed. Rotate the gears by hand and inspect axle play and shell contact. Apply only the lubricant appropriate to the support and gearbox; excess lubricant should not be used to hide a poor fit.
