Helical Airsoft Gears: What Must Be Checked
Helical gears use angled teeth instead of the straight tooth form seen on many AEG gears. That changes the contact pattern between mating gears and can introduce axial loading. A helical set therefore has to be treated as a matched system; individual gears should not be mixed by appearance alone.
Start with matched geometry
Confirm that the bevel, spur and sector gears are designed to work together and that their helix direction and tooth geometry match. The gearbox shell, axle supports and available clearance must also suit the set. A ratio label does not prove these points.
Shimming and support matter
Seat all bushings or bearings securely. Shim each gear with the shell closed, checking free rotation and lateral movement. Because angled teeth can create axial force, inspect for contact with the shell and for support movement under load. Set motor height from the pinion-to-bevel engagement.
Test without assumptions
Cycle the assembled gearbox manually before adding the spring. After reassembly, use short powered tests and inspect the contact pattern and temperature. Helical teeth are sometimes marketed with broad noise or torque claims, but those outcomes depend on the complete design and build quality and are not guaranteed here.
