AEG Pistons: What to Check Before an Upgrade
An AEG piston is the moving body that carries the tooth rack engaged by the sector gear. It is separate from the piston head. Material alone does not determine whether a piston suits a build; body dimensions, rack position, tooth condition, travel and head attachment must all be checked.
Body and rack choices
Polymer bodies can reduce moving mass, while metal-rack designs change tooth construction and load distribution. Neither description guarantees durability. Inspect how the rack is retained, whether its tooth profile matches the sector gear and whether the body moves freely in the cylinder and gearbox guides.
Check engagement manually
Without the spring, rotate the sector gear through pickup and release. Confirm the first contact, full travel and release without the rack or body striking the gearbox. DSG, short-stroke and other specialist configurations require their own engagement check; a conventional piston recommendation should not be copied across builds.
Piston head and assembly
Verify the piston-head attachment, bearing stack, overall assembly length and clearance. A piston head with O-rings is an adjacent compression component, not proof that the piston body itself is compatible or that a specific seal or FPS result will follow.
Before powered testing
Complete gearbox shimming, motor alignment and tappet checks first. Begin with a short test and stop if pickup, release or travel is uncertain. Do not rely on unsupported success rates or universal material rules.
