Replacing Self-Shimming Gears with Conventional Gears
Changing from a self-shimming gear set to conventional AEG gears is a gear-set replacement and shimming job. Do not remove springs or modify the old gears with the expectation that they will become a correctly fitted conventional set.
Confirm the replacement set
- Verify the gearbox platform and required gear-set type.
- Check shaft diameters, bushing or bearing fit and available shell clearance.
- Inspect the piston rack, anti-reversal latch and motor pinion interface.
- Keep the old set intact until the replacement has been fitted and tested.
Shim from a clean baseline
Install the replacement gears with the correct supports and build the shim stack for that shell. Check axial play, gear mesh and shell closure at each stage. Rotate the completed gear train by hand before installing the spring system and applying power.
Test without assuming a performance gain
A conventional set offers direct control of shim placement, but the result still depends on gear quality, shell alignment and installation. Listen for abnormal mesh and stop if the motor strains or the gearbox binds.
