Airsoft Gear Ratios: How to Choose for an AEG
An AEG gear ratio describes the reduction through the gearbox gear train. A lower numeric ratio such as 13:1 provides less reduction than 18:1, but that does not make it automatically better. The right choice depends on the motor, spring load, battery and wiring, electronic controls, shimming, piston setup and sector-gear design working together.

What an AEG gear ratio tells you
Labels such as 18:1, 16:1, 13:1 and 12:1 identify different reduction choices. With the same motor speed, a lower reduction can turn the driven gear train faster, while the complete build determines the actual cycle speed, electrical load and heat. Gear ratio is not an FPS rating and cannot predict a finished build by itself.
Not every ratio uses the same written format. JVAN also uses 100:200 as a gear-ratio designation. It belongs to the same technical category as 18:1, but the two labels must not be treated as numerically equal.

The best ratio is therefore a build decision, not a universal ranking. Start with the gearbox platform and the intended use, then evaluate the ratio with the components that will actually be installed.
The sector gear connects the gear train to the piston cycle. Its tooth layout is a separate design choice from the printed ratio.
Ratio, sector teeth and stroke are different choices
A ratio label describes the gear train, while the sector gear determines how the piston is engaged during a cycle. A standard single-sector gear, a short-stroked setup and a dual-sector gear are not interchangeable descriptions.
- Single-sector gear (SSG): one sector-tooth segment engages the piston during each sector-gear rotation.
- Short stroke: fewer engagement teeth are used to shorten piston travel; this changes the stroke and must be evaluated as part of the complete setup.
- Dual-sector gear (DSG): two sector-tooth segments engage the piston twice per sector-gear rotation. A DSG build requires its timing, piston engagement and surrounding components to be planned together.
Platform-specific tooth layouts matter as well. For example, JVAN’s SR25 AEG gear set uses a 19-tooth sector gear, while its traditional 18:1 gear-set reference uses 16 sector teeth. That difference identifies a mechanical configuration; it does not by itself prove a ratio, speed, travel or compatibility result.
Choose the complete system, not one number
- Define the goal: decide whether the priority is a conventional replacement, response-focused build, full-auto use or another clearly defined setup.
- Confirm the platform: verify gearbox version, shaft and bushing or bearing fit, gear clearance and the required sector-gear configuration.
- Set the mechanical load: identify the spring, piston, stroke and moving mass before choosing the final motor-and-ratio combination.
- Match the electrical system: consider the motor, battery, wiring, MOSFET or ETU settings and expected current draw as one system.
- Check assembly quality: verify gear mesh, axle support, motor height and gearbox shimming before powered testing.
- Test the finished build: confirm reliable cycling and monitor current and temperature under the actual configuration instead of relying on the ratio label alone.
The bevel gear transfers motor input into the gear train, so motor alignment and gear mesh remain part of the setup.
