How to Plan and Check a DSG AEG Build
A dual-sector gear (DSG) has two piston-engagement sections on the sector gear. That changes the cycle geometry and makes the build more dependent on the piston, tappet system, spring, motor, battery and electronic control working together. A DSG gear set is not a universal shortcut and should be planned as a complete system.
1. Confirm the gearbox and gear set
Start with the exact gearbox version and the documented application of the gear set. Check the shell, axle-support size, available clearance and gear alignment. The JVAN 9:1 DSG product is intended for specialist V2/V3 AEG builds, but the installer must still verify the actual gearbox and surrounding components.
2. Check piston engagement
With the spring removed, install the gears and piston and rotate the system by hand. Observe both engagement sections. The piston rack must engage and release correctly on each cycle. Do not assume a piston is suitable because it fits the shell; rack position, tooth condition and available travel also matter.
3. Check tappet timing and nozzle movement
Watch the tappet plate and nozzle through a complete manual cycle. Confirm rearward movement, release and forward return without rubbing. A delayer chip or different tappet component changes timing relationships and should only be used when the actual system requires it.
4. Finish shimming and motor alignment
Shim the bevel, spur and sector gears with the shell closed and screws tightened. Set motor height from the pinion-to-bevel contact, not from sound alone. Read the AEG gearbox shimming guide before powered testing.
5. Test in controlled stages
Confirm the battery, motor, spring and electronic control are within their manufacturers’ documented limits. Begin with short tests and inspect engagement, heat and fasteners between stages. Stop if the gearbox binds, the piston pickup is inconsistent or the tappet system does not return freely.
